Finding Inspiration in Every Turn

Our Story

My son Dexter like lots of children loves football, he is an academy player and we spend lots of time travelling to and from training and games, we have long discussions about all things.....and that’s how it all started, a mum and son having a conversation in the car coming back from a football training session.

Dex and I have talked lots and lots about how important it is in football (sport in general) to have a healthy mind and to stay positive. So with football at the forefront of EVERYTHING he does, we talked about how he has felt in the past and what it’s like if you are feeling low in confidence, he said sometimes he didn’t know how to tell us or his coach, he said sometimes he didn’t know himself why he felt a certain way. This got us thinking, and because football is his life, is this something we could help children with that play sport, there must be lots and lots of others that sometimes feel this way too?

We talked about how important it is to share how you are feeling. I asked Dex to really think about what could we do?, What would be a good way of letting kids show how they feel? and importantly give them positive messages.

We came up with an idea of having a set of cards, each one different, some have positive quotes, some have tips on how you can keep yourself calm (for example), some just say “today I feel...”, some just offer a thought on how you can be positive with other’s in your team and Dex has also added some footballing tips/quotes which he said have helped him.

You attach a card/s via a keyring and hang it from your sports bag. They are interchangeable and can hold more than one card at a time. The purpose is to not only allow you to see how they are feeling but also to boost their confidence and positivity. They have such a wide use.... they can be given out by parents, coaches, teachers, you can give them to your friends, teammates, or you can just let the child decide which ones they want to use.

First and foremost the cards are a positive way of promoting healthy thoughts....they are intended to make you feel empowered. If you are feeling a little worried - then show us because we can help, someone else may be feeling that way too, equally, if you are feeling full of positive energy then share it with us!!! it will boost us all!!!

It started as a “pocket money” project for Dexter. How could he help other children feel positive about themselves? The initial cards are football-related because this is where Dex wanted to start...he feels he has a lot of knowledge that can help. I wanted to show him that this is a really important message to get out. Sport can help you feel better in so many ways. With this in mind, we decided that we would like to donate 10% of all sales to a Children’s Mental Health Charity that encourages children into sport. We are in the process of finding one.

We have quickly realised the potential to expand this to other sports and also schools, organisations etc. Because the initial conversation was football - then that’s where Dex wanted to start.... but watch this space they are coming...

This started with just one boy saying “I know what it’s like to not know how to share your feelings, we can all feel like that sometimes... I hope these can help you".

We hope you like them........

Our Chosen Charity

We are proud to work with
and support CHUMS Charity

CHUMS is a Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing support for Children, Young People, and their families, with other services specifically supporting adults; Babyloss Bereavement Service and Suicide Bereavement Service. We support over 3,000 children, young people, and their families every year and this number is growing all the time. The children we meet need specialist support to help with anxiety, increase self-worth and build resilience. Every child is different and presents with different issues, therefore we provide a range of services to help each individual young person. Our experienced clinicians can provide the right support, at the right time - allowing them to go forward and reach their full potential.

CHUMS receive no contractual funding for our 5 charitable services and relay on fundraising to be able to keep these services running, our 5 charitable services are as follow:

  • The Trauma Service – bereavement and non-bereavement trauma (e.g., sexual abuse or witness to domestic violence)

  • The Recreational Therapeutic Service – supporting children and young people who struggle to engage with traditional talking therapies

  • Bedfordshire Suicide Bereavement Service (BSBS) – providing support to families and other networks in the immediate aftermath of a devastating death by suicide
